This was the infamous episode of Pokémon that caused 600 to 700 kids to
suffer from seizures on its first (and final) airing in Japan.
After the incident, this episode was permanently removed from the episode
line-up. It was not dubbed into English. It can't be found on any official
Japanese videos. It doesn't even have an official episode number (although
we use 38). It's as if it never existed.
Ash and friends are traveling along when a tired Pikachu
practically begs for Ash to take it to the nearest Pokémon Center. They arrive
to find a distressed Nurse Joy, fretting over the Pokémon Transport System. It
seems that when she sends one type of Pokémon to her cousin in Tokiwa City, it
arrives at the Pokémon Center as a *different* type of Pokémon! Professor
Akihabara, the inventor of the transport system, declares that nothing could be
wrong with his perfect program and he goes back to his house to fix it. Ash and
friends are told to follow, so they arrive at his house to find a giant floating
head! Brock correctly deducts that the head is a holographic 3-D image, so it
directs Ash and friends to a room with a large cylinder.
The real Professor Akihabara emerges and tells Ash and
friends that he's figured out what's wrong. A group of Pokémon thieves had broken
into his laboratory to steal his prototype Pokémon, a Porygon. Professor
Akihabara caught them red-handed and, to prevent them from getting away with it,
he transported them into the computer world. Unfortunately for Professor Akihabara,
the thieves started causing mischief inside the computer, setting up blockades to
prevent the proper transfer of Pokémon. Akihabara tells Ash and friends to go into
the computer world to stop them, and they are, despite their protests, sent inside
along with one of his Porygon.
As Ash and friends come out of the gateway from the real world
to the computer world, Porygon grows to many times its own size so that Ash and
friends can ride on its back. They ride around for a little while until they come
across the invading Pokémon thieves--it's none other than Jessie, James, and Meowth!
A battle ensues.
Jessie and James send out their Arbok and Weezing,
respectively. Professor Akihabara's Porygon uses its conversion technique to
change itself into a poison-type and quickly beats the two Pokémon. Next, the
Rockets use the Porygon that they had stolen earlier. The Porygon, wearing a 0
on its forehead and a miniature Team Rocket flag on its tail, turns into a big
lance/sword-like thing. Ash and friends's Porygon changes into a giant shield,
and the two Porygon go at it for a while. Ash, excited over the great battle
taking place, has to be yelled at by Professor Akihabara (who's talking to them
through a monitor) to remind him of why he's there. Ash and friends snap out of
it and start removing the barricades as the flow of Pokéballs starts to return to
normal. Team Rocket notice this and run to stop them, but before they can reach
Ash and friends they are pummeled by a barrage of Pokéballs. Pikachu then steps
up and electrocutes them, sending the Rockets and the stolen Porygon blasting off
again.
Just as Ash and friends rejoice over their victory, Professor
Akihabara notices a new anomaly in his program. It seems that Nurse Joy has hired
a technician to put a powerful anti-virus program into the system without knowing
that Ash and friends are still inside! We see the virus (which looks like a
futuristic ambulance) going through the computer, searching for its prey. Meanwhile,
Ash and friends remove the last of the barriers when they notice that the Pokéballs
aren't really moving anywhere. Then they notice a stop sign that they had missed,
so they go to destroy it. Suddenly, the video screen with the professor's face
appears to warn them about the oncoming virus. Ash and Misty don't really care,
but Brock warns them that the anti-virus will see them as invaders and attempt to
delete them! As soon as Ash and Misty realize the seriousness of their situation,
the anti-virus arrives!
Panels on the side of the ambulance fold down to reveal large,
vaccine needle-shaped missiles! Ash calls on their Porygon and everybody gets on
the Pokémon's back to escape as Team Rocket, riding on their Porygon, appear.
They are riding toward Ash and friends (and the anti-virus program) and accuse
Ash and friends of being too afraid for a rematch, but Ash warns them about the
anti-virus program. The program then fires its missiles toward Team Rocket's
stop sign, destroying it. The Pokéballs resume flying across cyberspace, hitting
Team Rocket on the way. The anti-virus starts to go after Team Rocket, aiming its
missiles at them. It fires four, and the first one hits the Porygon, causing the
Rockets to go plummeting downwards! The second one follows the falling Team
Rocket while the third one narrowly misses Ash and company's Porygon. It's hit
by the fourth one, and then stunned by a fifth one, which knocks Ash and friends
off its back. The Porygon is able to shake off its paralysis in time to swoop in
and save Ash and friends from plummeting to their death.
The screen with Professor Akihabara's head appears again
to tell Ash and friends that he's spotted an exit, a portal floating in mid-air
(a portal not unlike the portals in the Nintendo 64 game Pokémon Snap). Team
Rocket, on their Porygon, appear behind them (they apparently escaped their
missiles too) and are interested in escaping as well. Back in the real world,
the technician hired by Nurse Joy is still detecting invading files, so he
decides to take drastic measures. The syringe-missiles on the anti-virus split
open, revealing a humongous gun! The gun fires, causing a huge explosion that
engulfs Team Rocket and cause the computer system to crash. The technician loses
control of the program, and Nurse Joy chastises him for being too drastic.
Inside the computer, Team Rocket find themselves in a
large pit-like area. As James unsuccessfully tries to climb the slick walls,
Meowth says that it would be a piece of cake for them to get out if they still
had their Porygon. Jessie asks where it's at, and Meowth points to the cyber
Pokémon, unconscious on the ground. Jessie tries to wake it up, but its head
just droops back.
Meanwhile, Ash and friends are heading toward the exit
when they decide to go back to help Team Rocket. The anti-virus program, having
been fixed, re-emerges and aims its weapons at the Rockets. Just as it's fired,
two vines slither down and pick the Rockets up, lifting them to safety. The vines
belong to Ash's Bulbasaur, who brings them up to Ash and company's Porygon. Now
carrying Team Rocket, the group's Porygon begins to grow tired from the added
weight and can't move as quickly. The anti-virus program aims and fires four
missiles at the Porygon! Unable to dodge, the Porygon seems doomed to deletion
when Pikachu steps in. After firing a massive electric bolt (this is what caused
all those seizures), two of the missiles are destroyed. Ash and friends reach the
exit portal just as the last two missiles hit. The anti-virus missile cause a huge
explosion, an explosion that demolishes Professor Akihabara's house!
Ash and friends emerge from the rubble bruised, but they're
basically okay. Team Rocket emerge and, after declaring that they are still enemies,
say a big "THANK YOU!" to Ash and friends before running off. Professor Akihabara
weeps as he looks at the ruins of his inventions, declaring that he will rebuild.
Ash and friends are happy to have escaped with their lives, but Pikachu is there
to remind Ash of why they got involved in the first place (to take it to the
Pokémon Center to rest!). Pikachu is taken to the Pokémon Center, where the
transport system is operating normally. After a good rest, Ash and friends leave
to resume their journey...
