NEW YORK - There is real money being made in the land of make-believe. Not to mention in Middle Earth, 100 Acre Wood and in a galaxy far, far away.

According to our calculations, the top-ten fictional characters grossed more than $23 billion worldwide last year. Traditional media companies like The Walt Disney Co. (nyse: DIS - news - people ), Viacom (nyse: VIA - news - people ) and AOL Time Warner (nyse: AOL - news - people ) grabbed the lion's share of that revenue, but firms ranging from videogame makers to consumer-products giants are also cashing in.

1.) Winnie the Pooh - $5.9 billion
2.) Mickey Mouse - $4.7 billion
3.) Harry Potter - $2.9 billion
4.) Spider-man - $2.7 billion
5.) Frodo - $2.2 billion
6.) Darth Vader - $1.3 billion
7.) Sully - $993 million
8.) Pikachu - $825 million
9.) Spongebob Squarepants - $800 million
10.) Yu-Gi-Oh - $725 million
